Why Steel Doors Cost More Than Aluminium — And Why Many Homeowners Still Choose Them

When people first begin comparing internal steel and aluminium doors, the initial reaction is often the same: “They look quite similar… so why is there such a big price difference?”

It’s a fair question. Online, most internal door systems appear almost identical — slim black frames, large glazed panels, minimalist styling. From a distance, aluminium and steel can seem interchangeable. But once you see them in person — and understand how they are made — the differences become much clearer.

For many homeowners, architects, and developers, steel doors are not simply another building product. They become part of the architecture of the home itself. And that is largely why they sit in a completely different category.

It Starts With the Material

The biggest difference is also the simplest: steel is significantly stronger than aluminium. That additional strength allows for much slimmer sightlines and larger expanses of glazing without compromising rigidity. The result is a cleaner, more refined appearance that feels effortlessly architectural.

In modern homes, where minimalism and detail matter more than ever, these small differences have a surprisingly large impact. Steel simply allows us to do things aluminium cannot achieve in quite the same way. The doors feel more substantial. More solid. More permanent.

The Manufacturing Process Is Completely Different

Another major difference lies in how the doors are actually constructed. Many aluminium systems are mechanically assembled using sections and joints. While this creates a practical and cost-effective product, it can sometimes lack the seamless appearance associated with luxury interiors.

Our RK Steel doors are individually hand made and fully welded as complete units. This creates a much cleaner finish with no visible joint lines and a far more cohesive appearance overall. Even on FD30 fire-rated doors — where glazing bars are necessary — we still maintain clean welded external faces and frames to preserve the authentic steel look on both our Classic frame fire doors to our stunning Ultra slim frame fire doors.

It is one of those details people may not immediately notice individually, but collectively it changes how the entire product feels.

Then There Is the Finish

This is often the moment people truly understand the difference. Steel doors tend to stand out immediately when viewed in person because the finishing process itself is far more refined. The coatings are higher quality. The consistency across frames and doors is better. The finish has greater depth and richness. Photographs rarely capture this properly. It is often only when clients visit one of our showrooms and see both products side-by-side that the distinction becomes obvious.

More Than Functionality

Perhaps the biggest difference, however, has nothing to do with engineering at all. Aluminium doors can look very good. Steel doors tend to become a feature within the home. They define spaces. They frame views. They create atmosphere.

Rather than simply separating rooms, they contribute to the overall interior design in the same way statement lighting, flooring, or bespoke joinery would. That is why steel doors are so commonly chosen in high-end renovations and luxury developments where consistency and attention to detail are everything.

Cost vs Investment

Of course, steel doors are more expensive, there is no avoiding that. But for most clients choosing steel, the decision is rarely based purely on initial cost. It is about the final result and the overall feel of the home once complete.

Many homeowners investing heavily into their property want materials that feel timeless, architectural, and genuinely premium throughout, and in those environments, steel doors often feel entirely at home. Particularly at the top end of the market, buyers tend to recognise quality immediately. Premium materials and finishes subtly influence how a property is perceived. In contrast, more standard aluminium or timber systems can sometimes feel less refined within luxury spaces.

So Which Is Right for You?

There is no universal answer.

Aluminium doors remain an excellent solution for many projects and offer a strong balance between aesthetics and affordability. But if the goal is to create a home with standout architectural features, slim sightlines, exceptional detailing, and a truly premium feel, steel doors are often difficult to replicate.

Ultimately, the difference comes down to this:

  • Aluminium doors are typically chosen as a practical solution.
  • Steel doors are chosen as part of the design vision.

Final Thoughts

Steel doors cost more because they involve stronger materials, more intricate manufacturing, hand-finished construction, and a considerably higher level of refinement. But beyond all of that, they deliver something harder to quantify: Presence. They do not simply function within a home — steel doors elevate it.

And for many of our RK Steel clients, that difference is worth the investment.
